How Often Should You Get a Massage?

By Maggie Tso – Mobile Massage Therapist, South West London

Massage isn’t just a treat — it’s a form of body care that can support your physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. One of the most common questions I’m asked is:

“Maggie, how often should I have a massage?”

The answer depends on your body, your lifestyle, and your goals — but let me guide you through the general recommendations based on what I’ve seen in my practice.

If You’re Looking to Relax and De-Stress

Once every 3 to 4 weeks is a lovely rhythm. This allows your body to recharge, your muscles to stay soft, and your mind to unwind. It’s like pressing the reset button for your nervous system.

If you’re in a busy season or under pressure (emotionally or physically), you might benefit from fortnightly sessions until things settle.

If You Have Muscle Tension or Physical Pain

Weekly massage for a few weeks can really help your body release deep-seated tension — especially in the back, shoulders, or legs.

After that, you can shift to every 2 to 3 weeks for maintenance. For example, clients who sit at desks or lift heavy things often come to me fortnightly to prevent pain from building up again.

If You’re Postnatal or Need Lymphatic Support

In the first month of postpartum care or after surgery (with doctor’s clearance), I recommend:

  • 2–3 times per week for the first 2 weeks

  • Then gradually reducing to once per week or every 10 days as the body stabilises

Gentle, regular massage during this time helps:

  • Support circulation

  • Drain excess fluids

  • Calm the nervous system

  • Encourage natural recovery

If You’re Just Starting

If you're new to massage or not sure how your body will respond, start with one session, then see how you feel after a few days. Some clients say, “I feel lighter already!” while others discover muscles they didn’t know were tense.

Trust your body — it knows what it needs.

Maggie’s Advice

No matter how often you choose massage, consistency is key. Just like good food and sleep, regular bodywork can help you:

  • Feel more relaxed

  • Improve circulation

  • Reduce anxiety and muscle pain

  • Sleep better and move better
